Battle of the Beats: Producers Timbaland vs Swizz Beatz
Legendary hip-hop producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz are set to face off in a beat battle for the ages.
Swizz Beatz informed fans of his challenge to fellow producer Timbo while onstage in Brooklyn. He released the announcement on the night of the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor press conference. Timbo was immediately #withthesmoke.
The two went back and forth, posting Instagram videos of their “warm up” beats, while tagging one another in their videos.
Both Timbaland and Swizz Beatz rose to fame in the late 90s. Both were able to sustain their top tier status throughout the 2000s.
Timbo started producing for Hip-Hop/R&B artists like Missy Elliot and Aaliyah (RIP). He built a strong relationship with Justin Timberlake in the 2000s. He produced many of Timberlake’s singles as well as his LPs Future Sex/Love Sounds and The 20/20 Experience. Over the years, the “Promiscuous” producer has racked up 4 Grammys and 18 nominations.
Swizz began as a teenager, making a name for himself by working with/producing for DMX, and later signing to Ruff Ryders Entertainment. In the early 2000s, he took rapper Cassidy under his wing as his protégé and even went on to sign Bone Thugs N Harmony.
A date has not yet been released for the actual battle. But it looks to be one to remember.
Swizz is apparently trying to challenge producers to participate in beat battles like this more often (in the past, he has battled Just Blaze). So there will certainly be many more to come. Competitions like this are great for hip-hop because it keeps a hungry competitiveness alive in the artist community.
Nas and Kendrick Lamar have given their views on the competition:
Stay tuned for the next issue as we all witness an epic battle between the two legends.
